St. Albert youth need to be celebrated for their successes and provided with support in their moments of need!
St. Albert is richly blessed with passionate and talented young people. They bring excitement, joy and laughter to life within our wonderful community. Those of us who grew up in earlier times, may not fully understand or appreciate the challenges faced by a generation growing up in the 21st century.
Today’s youth must navigate the complexities of growing to adulthood within the context of a fast-paced, rapidly changing world. Many of our youth experience feelings of loneliness and social isolation. The desire for acceptance and community, essential requirements for belonging, has not changed over time. Emerging technologies have given us increased access to information and connectivity to others, however in many cases they exacerbate, rather than ease the issues confronting our young people.
Today’s economic environment intensifies the challenges faced by our youth. Most families require a dual income to sustain a family home. Single parent families are especially affected by the increase in living expenses. Parents support the recreational and cultural activities that enhance their children’s education, but find the financial balancing act difficult when paying mortgages and child care costs.
In our current reality, our youth encounter new risks, specifically the opioid crisis with Fentanyl, Carfentanil and other drugs (or mixtures thereof). These drugs are sold, on the street, as harmless recreational escapes from the stresses of everyday life when, in fact, they are highly toxic with death only one innocent misuse away. St. Albert is not immune to this crisis.
St. Albert must support our youth and help them successfully transition from childhood, through their teenage years to adulthood. Social initiatives, like those provided by “The Collective” must receive the resources necessary to meet the needs of young people in our community.
St. Albert youth are talented, creative, entrepreneurial and energetic. They have excelled in all areas of endeavour, whether in sports, theatre, business, the arts or academics. In each of these areas, our youth need to see, hear and feel the support of their community.
Therefore, I am committed to providing the counselling resources necessary to The Collective and working to ensure our youth have the resources and facilities necessary to pursue their dreams. In doing so, we celebrate their creativity, initiatives and accomplishments.
